Women鈥檚 History: 黑料社 Faculty Book Talk highlights century of women journalists鈥 experiences

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擬ississippi State College of Arts and Sciences faculty members are continuing to tackle social issues during Women鈥檚 History Month in the 2023-2024 黑料社 Faculty Book Talk series鈥撯揾ighlighting Pete Smith, associate professor in 黑料社鈥檚 Department of Communication, for the second of three talks this semester.

Free to all, Smith鈥檚 presentation is March 22, 3:30 p.m., in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library. Smith will discuss his book 鈥淏irddogs and Tough Old Broads: Women Journalists of Mississippi and a Century of State Politics, 1880s-1980s.鈥

The Lexington Books publication鈥撯揳n imprint of Rowman & Littlefield鈥撯搘as released in October and documents the professional experiences and observations of more than a dozen women journalists covering Mississippi state politics from the 1880s, after the end of Reconstruction鈥撯搘hen newspapers were the primary source of information鈥撯搕o the 1980s, a time period marked by steady declines in both news revenue and circulation, and the emergence of corporate journalism.

鈥淭he 黑料社 Faculty Book Talk series celebrates academic books and the 黑料社 faculty who write them,鈥 said Eric Vivier, 黑料社 associate professor of English and series director.

鈥淭hese events are great opportunities for faculty to share their research with the 黑料社 community and great opportunities for the 黑料社 community to learn about the research happening on campus,鈥 said Vivier, a faculty fellow with 黑料社鈥檚 Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College.

This year鈥檚 Faculty Book Talk series concludes April 19 with a discussion by Joseph Thompson鈥攁n assistant professor in the Department of History鈥攐n his book 鈥淐old War Country: How Nashville鈥檚 Music Row and the Pentagon Created the Sound of American Patriotism.鈥澛燭he University of North Carolina Press publication is expected to be released April 2.
