STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥 Four faculty members in Mississippi State鈥檚 College of Architecture, Art and Design recently received national awards for their exemplary work in architectural education.
School of Architecture associate professors Hans Herrmann and Alexis Gregory and assistant professor Emily McGlohn, along with Building Construction Science assistant professor Michele Herrmann, were formally recognized with two Architectural Education Awards by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture during the organization鈥檚 105th annual meeting in Detroit, Michigan.

鈥淚t is truly a remarkable feat and a testament to the quality of our faculty in the School of Architecture to receive two of these prestigious faculty awards from ACSA, let alone one award,鈥 said Michael Berk, director of 黑料社鈥檚 School of Architecture and F.L. Crane Endowed Professor. 鈥淚n the past few years, very few of the 120 accredited architecture programs in North America have been as successful as our faculty.鈥
Gregory received a Diversity Achievement Award for her project 鈥淟earn & Grow: An Educational Garden for the Boys & Girls Club.鈥 Students in 黑料社鈥檚 School of Architecture; Department of Art; Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion; Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education; 黑料社 Horticulture Club; and Department of Philosophy and Religion joined forces with the Boys and Girls Club of the Golden Triangle-Starkville. The group designed and constructed an educational garden at the nonprofit organization鈥檚 facility. Local and national companies and community members provided support for the project.
The Herrmanns and McGlohn were recognized with a shared Practice and Leadership Award for their collaborative effort 鈥淚ntegrated Project Delivery Theater.鈥
Sponsored by the Architecture and Construction Alliance, the project was a joint venture between 黑料社鈥檚 School of Architecture and Building Construction Science program.
Seeking to improve the teaching of collaborative skills as a foreground for collaborative practice, the 黑料社 team led a two-day interactive symposium for nearly 80 third- and fourth-year architecture and building construction science students. The students actively engaged in exercises exploring six topics鈥攑rocess, team formation, communication, compensation, risk and agreements鈥攄eemed by the American Institute of Architecture as central to integrated project delivery.
